Apollo–Soyuz Experimental Mission

The last spaceflight of an Apollo ship was at the same time the first joint United States–Russia flight. Also, this was the only flight of Donald (Deke) Slayton, NASA’s first Chief of the Astronaut Office.

This mission was launched on July 15, 1975. Two spaceships, American and Russian were docked and crews exchanged handshakes. Later were conducted joint scientific experiments.

This mission was a first step to the cooperative international work in space.  This year the mission celebrates its 40th anniversary.
